Kyambogo University’s mission is to maintain high academic and professional standards in teacher education through various programs such as pre-service, in-service, refresher courses, seminars, conferences, and research.
In 1999, the university introduced a pre-service program, the Bachelor of Arts with Education Degree (BAED), designed for ‘A-‘ level graduates and diploma holders aspiring to pursue a career in education. The program initially began under Makerere University’s supervision, later moving to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and, after restructuring, finding its place in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
The BAED program is a three-year initiative housed in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, focusing on subject content areas, with the School of Education providing foundational courses. The Departments of Foundations of Education and Educational Psychology, Curriculum Pedagogy, and Education Media handle professional courses, while the Faculty of Arts and Humanities collaborates with the School of Management and the Faculty of Social Sciences for additional subjects such as ICT, Entrepreneurship, and Economics.
The ultimate goal of the BAED program is to confer graduates with a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree.
General Objectives
The overall objectives of the programme is to train teachers with adequate knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enable them to:
- Gain appropriate knowledge and skills in teaching arts disciplines at various educational levels.
- Develop curriculum for national, examination and policy bodies’
- Recognize the role of school inspection in education management.
- Appreciate the role of teachers in school administration and leadership at various levels.
- Identify problems in educational management, design and research
Specific Objectives
This programme should be to:
- Provide academic and professional knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes for teaching specific arts subjects of the teacher trainee’s choice.
- Equip the teacher trainee with competencies and effective teaching and administrative skills in primary and secondary schools, government departments, and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s).
- Create creative and innovative secondary school teachers who analyse and interpret the contemporary social, political, and economic roles of education in society and are able to apply them to educational issues and practices.
- Enable the graduate teacher to develop, evaluate, and utilise curriculum and educational resources in the education system.
- Provide skills in problem identification, design and research.
Admission to the programme shall be done in accordance with Kyambogo University Admission Regulations.
Direct Entry (Admission to the First Year)
A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the programme in the first year after meeting the following requirements:
- The Uganda Certificate of Education [‘O’] level or its equivalent
- Two principal passes in arts and humanities subjects of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education or equivalent examination results obtained at the same sitting OR
- Must pass the Kyambogo University Mature Age Examination
Admission to the Second Year
A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the programme in the second year on meeting the following requirements:
- A holder of a second-class diploma that meets the Kyambogo University diploma entry requirements with a specialisation in any of the arts and humanities disciplines
- A student who transfers from any another recognized university under an inter-university student exchange and credit transfer agreement must spend at least two years on the programme.
Duration: This is a 3-year academic year programme comprised of (6) semesters and two recess terms where School teaching Practice is conducted.
Disciplines : The School of Education shall offer courses in professional studies, namely:
Educational Psychology, History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Education, Curriculum Studies, Development Studies, Entrepreneurship, Learning Methods and Evaluation, General Methods and Fundamentals of Educational Technology, Special Needs Education, Guidance and Counseling, Comparative Education, and Educational Leadership and Management
Faculty of Arts and Humanities shall offer content and specific subject methods courses in the following areas: Communication skills, Basic Computer Skills, Economics, English Language, Literature in English, Geography, Kiswahili, Religious Studies, Advanced French Language and Literature, Performing Arts, History, Archaeology and Heritage Studies, Lusoga, Runyakitara and Arabic
Faculty of Social Sciences will teach the Economics courses, and the School of Management and Entrepreneurship shall conduct the teaching of ICT and Entrepreneurship. In no case will the Faculty of Arts and Humanities offer a subject combination of ICT and entrepreneurship since such students will be admitted to the School of Management and Entrepreneurship under Business Studies with Education.
