About the Conference

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Kyambogo University invites submissions for its annual conference on the theme “Good Health and Well-Being: The Intersection of Faith and Healing Practices in East-Central Africa.” The conference will be held in person at Kyambogo University from March 5th to 7th, 2025. This event is part of an interdisciplinary and institutional collaboration involving the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Kyambogo University, the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh, as well as the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Health Sciences at Mzuzu University, Malawi. These are in partnership with the Faculty of Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Theology at the University of Livingstonia, Malawi.

We, therefore, invite researchers from across disciplines—humanities, social sciences, and medicine—and practitioners from both conventional backgrounds, such as biomedical healthcare providers, and non-conventional backgrounds, such as exorcists, Koranic healers, herbalists, diviners, bonesetters, and others. We also welcome stakeholders, including local religious leaders, government officials, and representatives from the Ministry of Health, to submit panels, roundtables, and individual abstracts on any of the following areas:

  • Histories of Medicine, Disease and Healing
  • Faith, Belief, and Trust in State Health Care Interventions
  • Doctrine and Medical Knowledge and Practices
  • Faith and Activism: Rights, Resistance and Health Care
  • Gender Issues in Faith and Medicine
  • Faith, Mental Health and Mental Pathologies

  • Music, Language, and Faith Expressions
  • Religious Objects/Relics in Health Spaces
  • Spiritualism and ‘Alternative’ Medicine
