About Us

The Department of Literature and Film Studies offers a full package of literary, cultural and filmic studies, enhanced by a dexterous infusion of literary and Filmic courses meant to equip learners to match the demands and rigours of the 21st century globalized world.

Both our undergraduate and graduate academic programmes span an array of literary genres, themes, periods, cultures and authors—from the early (‘Orate’) period, through the Classical era, to the contemporary period, we offer specialized teaching and research supervision in such areas as, Oral Literature, Classical Literature, Poetry, Drama, Prose Fiction and Non-Fiction, Creative Writing, Literary Theory and Criticism, as well as filmic/cinematic studies. In addition, we also teach “Special Authors”, such as Shakespeare, Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Toni Morrison, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Okot p’Bitek, Chimammanda Ngozi Adichie, among others, who have made an invaluable contribution to both literary production and criticism.

In a bid to adequately prepare our students for successful careers, we, further, give them the opportunity to acquire practical (hands-on skills) and competencies in stage-performance of ‘Oral’ literary pieces and Drama, Poetry Recitation, Debating and Film Projects. Little wonder that most of our graduates have gone on to enjoy careers in teaching, creative writing, journalism, music and performance, editing and publishing, among others.

The department, further, promotes literary, cultural and filmic studies from the Global South, and it organizes regular symposia, colloquia, and conferences. Both faculty and students engage in interdisciplinary scholarship that draws its intellectual inspiration from the Kyambogo motto, “Knowledge and Skills for Service.”
