The programme is hosted by the Department of History, Archeology & Heritage

There is no society without a history, which forms the basis of the societal roots that guide the present and the future. The nature of problems experienced in the world today and in Uganda in particular demands competent graduates with extensive theoretical and practical skills in historical studies.

The Doctoral of Philosophy in History is designed to train the next generation of professionals with broad knowledge, competencies and skills in historical studies and employable in Research and Publishing Organisations, Public History Centres, Museums, Other Government Agencies and Departments.

PhD in History envisions a critical mass of scholars and professionals required to drive Uganda and the rest of the developing countries towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal number 4.

General Objective

The general objective of the Doctor of Philosophy in History is to produce graduates who are competent and well-grounded in the theory, research, and practical realities of history.

Specific Objectives

The objectives of this programme are to:

  • Produce graduates with clear thinking and the ability to generate new historical knowledge
  • Impart in the learners’ skills and ability to conduct research in historical study and disseminate its findings
  • Equip learners with competence and abilities to carry out scholarly activities and any other works that require historical expertise.

Target Group

The target group shall be Master Degree holders from:

  • University and other tertiary institutions’ academic staff in the fields of history, archaeology, and heritage studies
  • Researchers in the fields of history, archaeology, heritage studies, and cultural studies
  • Practitioners in Museum centers, Historical Sites, Archives, Historians in Government and Non-government Institutions, biographers, etc.
  • Applicants must be holders of at least a Master’s Degree in History, Archaeology, Heritage Studies, Cultural Studies, Anthropology, Peace Studies, Security, Political Studies (Science), Religious Studies, and History of Human Rights.

Note: Those with master’s degrees other than in history should have a strong background in history at the undergraduate level.

  • The candidate shall be required to submit a Concept Paper of 4–8 pages
  • Two letters of reference (one from an academic institution)

Duration

The programme will take a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years.
