The programme is hosted by the Department of Performing Arts

The Doctor of Philosophy in Musical Arts of Kyambogo University is a three-year strand-made programme in which you conduct research based on your choice of specialisation in any of the following fields: Music, Dance, Drama, Film, Applied Theatre, Applied Dance and Music Education. It is a coursework and dissertation programme in which you receive structured instructions in the first academic year before you proceed to conduct a research and write a dissertation in the second and third year. We aim to turn you into highly trained personnel whose skills shall be essential in strengthening and regulating the performing arts sector. As a doctoral graduate of Doctor of Philosophy in Musical Arts, you will participate in policy formulation. General Objective

The PhD in Musical Arts aims to produce proficient scholars in the performing arts (Music Dance Drama Music, Dance, Drama and Film, applied theatre and Applied Dance) and Music Education equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge in performance practice, performance ethics and independent research skills in order to strengthen the performing arts industry through informed cultural heritage policy formulation and innovation.

Specific Objectives

  • To train scholars who will be able to conduct research on pertinent issues in the performing arts sector;
  • To explain the theoretical, practical, and performance skill competences for the development and promotion of the performing arts and music industry in Uganda.
  • To examine the nature of professional competence in Music Dance, drama, Film, Music Education, Applied theatre and Applied Dance;
  • To discuss problem solving skills in practical performance of Music, Dance, Drama and Film; Music Education, Applied theatre and Applied Dance.

You should meet any of the following requirements:

  • Hold the Master of Arts in Music, from a recognised institution of higher learning,
  • Hold the degree of Master of Music Education of any recognised institution of higher learning.
  • Hold the degree of Master of Arts in Drama, from a recognised institution of higher learning,
  • Hold the degree of Master of Performing Arts with music or drama or dance from a recognised institution of higher learning.
  • Hold the degree of Master of Vocational Pedagogy with music, or dance or drama at Bachelor’s degree level of Kyambogo University or any other recognised institution of higher learning.
  • Hold the degree of Master of Arts in Literature of Kyambogo University or any recognised institution of higher learning.
  • Hold the degree of Master of Arts in Dance from a recognized institution of higher learning.
  • Hold the degree of Master in Film and Media Studies from a recognized institution of higher learning.
  • Hold the degree of Masters in Indigenous and Heritage Studies from a recognised institution of higher learning.

  • Demonstrate professional and practical competences that the emerging practice in the performing arts require;
  • Apply research-based solutions to the problems in the performing arts industry in Uganda and beyond.
