Exploring Climate Change between Science, Politics, and Ideology

Climate change stands as one of the most urgent and contentious issues of our time. With global temperatures rising, extreme weather events intensifying, and sea levels creeping higher, there’s no doubt that the climate is changing. But why is it changing? Is human activity and carbon emissions the primary cause, or is this part of Earth’s natural climatic rhythms that have occurred over millennia?

This complex question will take centre stage at a special seminar organized by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Kyambogo University, under the theme “The Climate Change: Between Science, Politics, and Ideology.” The event will take place today, Friday, 22nd November 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM in the Faculty Boardroom.

A Thought-Provoking Presentation by Dr. Tudor Caciora

Dr. Tudor Caciora, a distinguished climatologist from the Oradea University, Romania, will lead the seminar. With expertise in climatology and remote sensing, Dr. Caciora has an illustrious academic career. He has published 63 scientific works, including research articles, books, and conference proceedings. As an associate editor for renowned scientific journals, Dr. Caciora continues to shape the discourse on geographical and environmental studies.

In his presentation, Dr. Caciora will delve deep into the historical and current climate trends, analyzing the scientific data and challenging popular narratives. He will ask hard-hitting questions: Are we truly facing an unprecedented climate catastrophe, or are these changes part of the Earth’s natural climate history? Are we seeing the full picture, or is our understanding shaped by selective interpretations?

A Compelling Discussion by Dr. Francis Wasswa Nsubuga

Dr. Francis Wasswa Nsubuga, a climate scientist and lecturer at the Department of Geography, Kyambogo University, will serve as the discussant. With over 20 publications and extensive experience in climate science and water resource management, Dr. Nsubuga brings a wealth of knowledge to the discussion. He has previously contributed to critical climate assessments, including the Economic Assessment of the Impacts of Climate Change in Uganda.

Dr. Nsubuga’s response will provide a localized perspective on how global climate trends intersect with Uganda’s unique environmental and societal challenges.
