The Master of Arts in Religious Studies (MARS) program at Kyambogo University is designed to contribute to the university’s vision of academic and professional excellence. The Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy aims to impart socio-religious, ethical values, attitudes, and skills that are essential for societal transformation.

The program’s mission is to advance knowledge and skills in religious studies, fostering a deep understanding of various religious traditions. Graduates are expected to play pivotal roles as educators, researchers, and leaders, contributing to the transformation of Ugandan society and beyond. In response to the global demand for highly educated and trained professionals, the MARS program focuses on imparting knowledge, skills, and attitudes in religious, ethical, and interdisciplinary issues. The program addresses the shortage of qualified individuals in Religious Studies, providing specialized training for teachers, researchers, and religious leaders.

General Objective: To train graduates who are competent and well-grounded in various fields of Religious Studies.

Specific Objectives:

  1. Develop skills in planning and conducting action-oriented research.
  2. Equip graduates with critical approaches to the study of traditions, texts, and religious ideologies.
  3. Foster intellectual understanding of spiritualities and religious traditions influencing society.
  4. Enhance analytical skills in ethical and religious theories guiding moral decision-making.
  5. Impart knowledge and skills for effective teaching of Religious Studies in secondary and tertiary institutions.

Target Group: The program targets individuals with at least a lower second-class degree in various disciplines, including but not limited to Religious Studies, Education, Biblical Studies, Theology, Divinity, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Philosophy, Ethics, Islamic Studies, and other humanities disciplines.

Common regulations for Master’s degrees at Kyambogo University apply. The minimum qualification is a first degree of at least Lower Second Class from a recognized university, with sufficient coverage of Religious Studies or relevant humanities disciplines.

Duration of the Programme: The program spans four semesters or the equivalent of two academic years, with any extension guided by Kyambogo University’s Masters degree regulations.
